Hostgator used to be my first choice when choosing or recommending hosting service to anyone, but lately my thoughts have changed, and Hostgator seems to have left a bad impression on me, due to their bad services.
At this time, daPazze is hosted on Hostgator, and recently we are experiencing a lot of irrelevant issues with Hostgator, and in addition some poor quality customer support served to us. I am starting to feel that Hostgator has stopped respecting their customers and has also stopped caring about them.
Hostgator was known for good quality service for years, but now things have changed, as witnessed by us, and believe me, I have experienced some terrible things with Hostgator that I don’t want anyone to experience, and that’s why I am writing this article, to let you why Hostgator may not be the right choice for hosting your site.
In this article I will not be imposing some false accusations on Hostgator, or promote any other hosting services. I will just share my experiences that I have had with Hostgator and the Hostgator support team.
Poor quality service served with a high price tag
Some of your who are regular readers of daPazze might have witnessed some time when this site was unavailable to you and was showing some errors like “403 Forbidden”. Well I would like to take some time, and thank Hostgator for shutting down our site, making it unavailable to you people, and showing up that error message.
The reason they gave for shutting down our site is that our site was causing a high CPU load of about 84% suddenly which was caused by the plugins that we had installed on our site and we had to remove all plugins like security plugins, backup plugins and make out site “plugin free” to get our site back again.
Now let me tell you the funny and extraordinary part, we had been using the same plugins for the last 6 months on the same server and on the same site, and for the last 6 months they didn’t cause any such problem, while recently all of the plugins started to cause high CPU usage, strange isn’t it?
Even funny was the fact that I had another site hosted on the same server, which had exactly the same plugins installed, and strangely, that site seemed okay to them. I couldn’t understand this part that how can one site with some plugins cause problems while the other with same plugins stays fine.
Now comes the best part of them, they shut our site down suddenly without any prior notice to us. That is not the kind of service I had expected from them, but unfortunately I had to experience these kinds of problems recently, even after removing those plugins, we are still having some hiccups with the hosting service, as they shut down our website without prior notifications over and over again.
Customer support team, which really don’t support
After all these happened, when we asked for help, rather than being helped in the right way, we were presented with the same error log report repeatedly. If you think that was it, then let me tell you the whole thing.
When I told them about the situation that we were using the same plugins for the last 6 months, and there was another site hosted on the same server which had exactly the same plugins, then instead of understanding the situation, they forced us to remove all the plugins, even SEO by Yoast, I wonder what a SEO plugin has to do with high CPU usage.
Recently I had experienced another great support from them. I told them to fix a thing on this blog, but instead of fixing the thing, they messed up the whole site, shut the site down for a long time, and then when I filed a complaint about it, they took hours to reply to me, and fix the things.
As far as I know, support team members are there to help out customers with problem, and not to create new problems and make the situation worse. Unfortunately, this is the kind of treatment that we had experienced from them recently.
Hosting that’s not reliable enough
I have illustrated some cases, which clearly indicates that hosting service from Hostgator is not reliable enough. If you are planning to host your website on Hostgator servers, the you should be aware that your site might be suddenly shut down by them based on some invalid reasons, and you might suffer damage to your site’s reputation.
Moreover, the kind of support that I have got from them is of no use, and I would rather solve my own problems instead of asking for help to them, as they do what they feel without taking your prior permission, and they might mess up your site making it difficult for you to fix things.
Due to this kind of generous and excellent treatment from Hostgator, we are planning to move to a new server, where we would not face these kinds of problems, downtimes, and site blockage without prior notice. Many of you reading this article own a site, you might suggest me a better alternative, which would be a better place for daPazze.
You can help us have a better and healthy place to host daPazze, where daPazze would be available to you, always and would be helping you out whenever you need, instead of being shut down by some server issues. You can provide us, your affiliate links also through comments, and if we find your recommendation to be perfect for us, then we would certainly use your affiliate URL and purchase a hosting package, so as to say a thanks to you for letting us know of a better hosting.
Hostgator alternative
Eleven2 is a good alternative to Hostgator and other related hosting services, and provides good support and quality hosting, you might want to give this hosting a try.
I would be happy to have your comments, suggestions via comments, so do take some time and leave a comment below, and engage yourself with our community.

I completely agree with you on this topic Rahul.Hostgator has lost their edge in the hosting business with poor quality customer support and demanding high prices.

Yup, earlier they used to be one of best choices for hosting, but now, I would go for and wouldn’t recommend Hostgator to anyone, as what has happened to us can happen to other guys too.

It is most likely due to the deal they had with EIG. Well-known fact that each and every company taken over by EIG has gone down the drain. You’re not a custom of the same company anymore.
Sorry didn’t get your point Nishant, what is EIG and how is it associated with Hostgator?
Rahul Chowdhury recently posted..2 Big WordPress Flaws that Can Get You a Panda Slap
In case you didn’t know. Hostgator was entirely sold to an international group called EIG (google for it). EIG is known to buy all the hosting companies that grow big. But due to EIG’s poor technical management, almost every company they took over turned into a failure.
A few example,
fatcow
dreamhost
There are like 100+ known hosting companies they own.
Oh I see, didn’t knew about that. Is BlueHost, WPWebHost and Eleven2 in the list too?
Rahul Chowdhury recently posted..3 SEO Elements That You Should Not Ignore
Yes Rahul,
Blue host is under EIG (Endurance International Group). You can get all the list of hosting companies under EIG here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endurance_International_Group.
Still am with HG, and I didn`t saw any big drawn back from them after EIG. (I`m with HG before acquiring by EIG).
Anyway, I recently saw many complaints on HG.

Yup same thing happens with us too Mayur, we get mails from Pingdom that our site is down, and this happens everyday, and seeing their customer support we never bother to contact them, as we know we will hear such a same message as you have said.

Actually, The worst thing for blogger is to choose right webhost. However, there are many guys who paying annually and then left hostgator within a month or two !!! i suggest every new users to pay monthly, so we can test it and keep using it if we like, otherwise say bye bye.
Yes that’s exactly right, with these kinds of hosts you should always pay on a monthly basis, otherwise you will be stuck in a situation where you have to deal with all these problems and there’s now way of getting out early as you have paid a lot of money. We will also be moving to Eleven2 hosting very soon.

Are you using Shared Server of HostGator and still haven’t faced any issue yet? For how many months are you using HostGator?

Ya i totally agree with you. Many online shopping sites in india were hosted with hostgator but were facing a lot of problems. Now being in e-commerce business you cannot afford to have a downtime. It gives a bad impression and leaves a bad taste in consumers mouth. They will get frustated if your site is down and will never return. Could you suggest any other better hosting services which is reliable as well economical?
Yup that’s absolutely true Hiren, and I have already suggested a good alternative to Hostgator in the article, please refer to the section “Hostgator alternative”.

Is this problem with shared hosting or VPS?
.
It also happened with me that they have blocked one website without any prior notice to us
I feel so bad with this problem. But know I came to know they are doing same thing with everyone.
But I have Annual subscription of their service so wait for 7-8 months.
We faced the problem on a Shared hosting plan at Hostgator, Usman. Yes this is happening with a majority of people, and let’s hope that they don’t mess up your site in the remaining 7-8 months.
Rahul Chowdhury recently posted..Build an Email List for your Ecommerce Store: Top Ways
Hostgator have definitely worsen their support in the last 6 months. Before it was taking less than 20 minutes to receive a reply, now it takes 8 hours. I also experience a lot of downtime recently. Last month the uptime was 99.4% for me and trust me this is very bad! I am considering moving to another webhost.

Yes that’s absolutely true, they respond to the messages after a long time and without proper explanation or support. You can try the one listed above as a Hostgator alternative.

Seems like you had a nightmare with HostGator hosting service. Since its acquisition by EIG, I think its no more a reliable service. I found BlueHost to be its alternative and I’m happy with that!

Hi Rahul,
So far I’ve only used Bluehost’s services and I’m very pleased with my experience till now. I’ve been hosting my sites with them for about 2 years now.
I’m very sorry to hear about what happened to you. Most of the times the reliable and fast customer support is actually not reliable at all.
Thanks for sharing this information, I think it will definitely help other people make the right decision when it comes to choosing a host.
Have a great day Rahul.
~Philip
You are welcome Philip, and its good to know that Bluehost provides such good service to all, as everyone here is recommending Bluehost, I will surely have a deeper look at Bluehost.
Rahul Chowdhury recently posted..7 Things to Do When No One Reads Your Blog
I always believe that the web hosting by HostGator is simply overrated by the affiliate marketers just for the sake of the money they make behind it.. and it is the main reason why I choose BlueHost which when compared to HG is better in terms of service and I have noticed things in my own experience with BH.. even when the traffic spiked to 20k/day BlueHost was able to maintain the spike without any issues.
Yes absolutely, Hostgator has made a name for themselves but doesn’t know how to treat their customers right. And that’s great, which plan on Bluehost are you using, Standard or Pro?
Rahul Chowdhury recently posted..7 Things to Do When No One Reads Your Blog
I am using the standard plan on BlueHost

I’ve been with Hostgator for 3-4 years, and have recommended them to clients / friends as well.
What I’ve found is that the shared servers do get overloaded, and they get cranky about CPU usage, and have heard about them insisting on installing caching plugins on WordPress.
I personally have had 2 VPS’s with them, and have never had a customer support issue. If something breaks, I’ve been able to chat and get it fixed quickly.
I’ve always had my suspicion that VPS support is better quality than shared support, but when running a commercial blog, why would you want to use a shared service anyhow? When you upgrade, go with a VPS and see if that doesn’t improve things – support and performance wise
I have no experience with VPS supplied by Hostgator, but I can surely say that their Shared Hosting is too much limited for your site to properly breath.
