Every blogger or webmaster wants to have a good Alexa rank. Most of the new and even seasoned bloggers have a tendency to judge websites by simply looking at their Alexa rank. The reason is quite simple, according to them, the more visitors you get, the more your Alexa rank will increase. But the truth is something completely different.
Alexa, describes themselves to be an Web Information Company. What they do is give an unique rank to each and every single website in the World Wide Web. But there remains a big misconception that the more visitors you get, the better is your Alexa ranking. But its actually not. Alexa’s algorithm considers many other metrics to rank up a website, and not just visitors. There are many websites which get a very good amount of traffic but their Alexa rankings are very poor and disappointing. And there are many websites or blogs, which inpite of getting less traffic has a much better Alexa rank.
But the problem is, we don’t know what metrics they actually consider for ranking websites. In this article we I’ll discuss about the metrics that are probably used by Alexa to rank up websites. “Probably” is the word I used, as no one knows what they actually use, but with our observation and experience of years, what we can do at best, is make a best possible guess of what they use.
In this article, the metrics that I have discussed has been sorted according to the correlation they have with the better Alexa rankings, so that it become easy for you to implement them.
1) Get More Visitors
Though we have discussed before that more visitors, doesn’t mean better rankings, still it remains at the top of the list. We should at first concentrate on driving more and more traffic to our websites. This factor has the highest correlation with Alexa ranking, so is the most important one.
So, at the very first instant, before doing anything else, try to get more targeted visitors, which will also lead to higher conversions. Some of the simplest ways to drive more and more traffic to your site, is by doing proper SEO, promoting your site through social media, etc.
2) Fresh Content Or Frequent Updates
Update your site as frequently as possible. It has been observed in many cases that, sites which are updated frequently have a much better Alexa ranking, than the ones which have much less update frequency.
Even I myself faced this problem, when my Alexa rank drastically went down when I was unable to update by blog for a few weeks. Alexa love fresh content, and always tend to rank websites with more freshness, higher than websites with stale content.
3) Increase User Engagement
User engagement includes factors like Page Views, Bounce Rate, Time On Site, etc. So, always try to increase your websites user engagement in terms of Page Views and Avg. Time on Site. Try to decrease the bounce rate as much as possible. The only way to do this is by updating your site with high quality content that will be beneficial to the readers.
Site’s with poor user engegemnt generally have a poor rank. So try to concentrate on getting targetted visitors. Even if you have less number of visitors, but still you will get better Alexa ranking, if they are more engaged to your site. Moreover, it will also lead to higher conversions.
4) Backlink Frequency
This is also an imoortant factor observed and also a very overlooked factor among many bloggers and webmasters. Alexa may also put some importance on the quality as well as the frequency of gaining the backlinks. Ensure that you gain quality backilinks and also in a very consistent manner.
It should not be like this, that in a certain month you gain 200-300 backlinks and the next month its not even 20 in number. Try to make things consistent, try to maintain a consistent Backlink Velocity Avoid buying huge amount of spammy links in a short span of time. It will not only affect your back link profile and can get you penalised, but may also affect your Alexa ranking. Do everything naturally to be in the safer side.
5) Install The Alexa Toolbar
According to Alexa, they only rank websites from the data they gather. Now for them there are only two ways to gather data, either through their Alexa Toolbar (that very few people actuallly have) or through the Alexa Widget (that rarely someone use).
So install the Alexa toolbar, and help Alexa gather information about your site. Encourage your friends and fellow bloggers also to install the Alexa toolbar. It is also true, that if you are in the technology or design niche, then it is quite probable that you will have a better Alexa rank than others. The reason is very simple. In the technology niche, your visitors will also be the ones who have interest in technology, software and apps. So it is quite probable that they will install the Alexa toolbar in their browser. Thus more you get visits from visitors, who have the Alexa toolbar installed, better will be your rankings.
6) Install The Alexa Widget
An another important tip to increase the Alexa ranking, yet ignored my many. Put the Alexa widget in your website or blog, either in the sidebar or in the footer, doesn’t matter, until it loads up properly.
This widget staying in your site will provide valuable information about each and every single visitor visiting your site and thereby improving your Alexa ranking.
7) Ask For Site Reviews
Alexa may put some importance on this factor also. But not much, probably. Ask some of your friends or fellow bloggers to write some good reviews about your site in Alexa’s site. Try to grab at least a 8-10 good reviews with some good ratings for your site.
It will probably have some good impact on increasing your Alexa rank and may probably improve it.
7) Write About Alexa
Write some reviews or articles about Alexa and make a reference to them, I mean give them a backlink. Alexa will probably love blogs and websites who write about them and reference them frequently.
This is not probably a very important and can be avoided if the above ones charm you. But still it has been observed that sites that write sometimes about Alexa and provide them with a backlink, finds some improvements on their Alexa rankings.
8) Alexa Pro
Alexa lists all websites and gives them a rsnk free of charge, but their is a paid option also, for which you can go “Pro”. You will also enjoy certain benefits if you resort to the paid option like you can put your own company’s logo in your Alexa profile, etc
Hopefully, after following this method you will see a good improvement in your Alexa ranking. I too followed these tricks and techniques myself in 2 of my blogs, and got great improvements. Kindly, don’t compare this blog’s Alexa rankings, as it a very new blog and these techniques are yet to be implemented here.
If you know some more tricks, that have helped you, do share it with us. I will include it in this list, if the tricks prove to be genuinely helpful.

Hi there, all these tips are very useful.
I have a question on how alexa ranking affects google, apparently i have read that good alexa ranking affects overall google ranking. Just to share my own experience regarding this. A month ago i read on a blog that installing alexa toolbar and visiting your site a few times a day would improve the ranking. I tried it on my website http://www.phoneaccessorize.co.uk and i started to notice considerable changes in my ranking. Infact in 30 days period it improved from 15,690,344 to 1,776,661 which seems remarkable. I did nothing apart from visiting the website daily.
I want to ask how good is that alexa ranking towards google ranking? Are they related by any means or not ? Please share if anyone knows about it.
Thanks
First of all, your question is really an interesting one. Alexa ranking doe not have any correlation with Google rankings. Google in no way considers Alexa rankings as a metric while ranking a page. For instance, a website or blog with a very poor rank can rank in the top 3 in Google by doing proper SEO and link building. Otherwise, only thse sites which have a good alexa ranking will tend to rank better in Google and the one ones with poor rank will always fall back.
And for your second mention, on the experiment that you performed on your site and improved its rank by 15,690,344 to 1,776,661, I would like to say that this technique is only possible if your rank is that far. I mean, if you get like 10-15 genuine vists daily, then only it is possible to have such a rank. So, now at this moment, if you install the toolbar and visit your own site several times daily then you will be increaseing the visit count by a lot. Therefore, it will improve your rank drastically.
I never knew that Alexa got their information from the Alexa toolbar… That means I could be getting a ton of views, but if nobody was using the Alexa toolbar when they viewed my site, my rating would be bad.

Yes, you are partially correct. Alexa collects most of the traffic information from the toolbar and Alexa widget. You must use both of these to remain on the safer side. And if your niche is something, that is related to SEO, Blogging, Technology, Social Media, Designing, then it is quite probable that your readers will have the Alexa toolbar installed. So you can expect the best possible Alexa results.

Hi Aritra,
You have mentioned here about backlinks as an important factor but to get a backlink from a PR3, PR4, PR5 web sites as from those below these ranks can be waste. Can you mention some ways to reach this goal.
Thanks in advance
I think you can start with Guest Posting and Blog Commenting. I would prefer Guest posting more than anything. It is a great way to build quality backlinks for your website in the most legit way. Hope it helps. Feel free to ask for any more queries.

I really don’t understand where from you got the idea of getting better PageRank from this article, while it is completely about improving Alexa Rankings.
Great reading!
I want to add one more tip: add social networking buttion. Facebook, twitter, linkedin, pinterest, etc. Social sharing is abosolutely a great source to add traffic. Sometimes I apply sem services from agencies to promote my hot product. That’s a good way to bring traffic.
I got your point, but will that help in improving Alexa Ranking in any way?
